Information

1. On sunny days, open the windows to ventilate the room.

The best way to make Tatami last longer is through ventilation. Open the window on a sunny day to ventilate the room, this will make a big difference in how long it lasts. If you can dry it in the sun, we also  recommend this. Additionally, during periods of high humidity such as the rainy season, use a dehumidifier or air conditioner to dehumidify the air.

This will help prevent mold, so we recommend that you use it.

2. When cleaning the Tatami, please refer to the picture mentioned below.

We recommend cleaning the Tatami with a vacuum cleaner, broom and a dry cloth (with well wrung water). When cleaning the Tatami, we recommend doing so along the grain of the Tatami.

Since dust is buried in the dents in the Tatamis, it can be easily removed and cleaned.

*Avoid cleaning with a hard brush as this may worsen the condition of the Tatami.

If your house is near the sea, the sea breeze from the ocean can cause your Tatami to wear out faster. We recommend that you wipe it dry frequently.

3. What to do if you spill coffee or soy sauce

Clean it immediately by gently patting it with a dry towel or kitchen paper.

Once a certain amount of dirt has been removed, lightly soak a toothbrush in a neutral detergent and brush it gently in the same direction as the fabric.

Most of the dirt can be cleaned with this method. However, it may leave stains on the Tatami. It is often said that you can use flour, salt, orange peel and tea leaves  to remove stains from Tatamis, but they are not very effective.

If you spill something, it’s best to take care of it as soon as possible.

4. What to do when mold grows

First, let the Tatami dry. Once the humidity has been eliminated, put on a mask and close the room.

Start working. Prepare a soft brush (pig bristles or camel or horse hair) and gently remove moldy areas along the grain of the Tatami.

Vacuuming will help prevent mold from spreading through the air.

After carefully removing the mold, spray the Tatami with a commercially available anti-mold spray or ethanol and then ventilate or dehumidify the Tatami.
