The Allure of Natural Tatami: A Gift from Japanese Nature

Our Dedication to Quality

Discover the secret behind the unique fragrance of Japanese tradition.

If you have ever traveled to Japan and stayed in a traditional Ryokan (inn), you might have noticed a unique, natural scent that you can't find anywhere else.

The source of that fragrance is **Igusa** (soft rush) used in Tatami. Igusa is a plant shaped like rice stalks, primarily grown in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. Its scent contains the same components as those found in deep forests, providing a profound relaxation effect.

🌿 Aromatic Compounds of Igusa

Phytoncide (20%)

The source of forest fragrance. It is an aromatic compound with antibacterial properties released by trees, often used in natural deodorizers.

Dihydroactinidiolide (approx. 10%)

While it has no scent on its own, it is known for its effect in enhancing other fragrances.

α-Cyperone

A component that promotes relaxation and is expected to have a sedative effect, helping you fall asleep better.

Vanillin

A component often used in perfumes, offering a rich and highly relaxing scent that leads to deeper sleep.

More Than Just a Scent

1. Humidity Control

Tatami absorbs moisture when humidity is high and releases it when the air is dry. Japan's summers are so humid that you can sweat just by walking 10 meters, making Tatami ideal for such a climate.

2. Natural Elasticity

Tatami has moderate elasticity that reduces the burden on knees and hips, making it ideal for resting or practicing yoga. This cushioning comes from the air trapped within the Igusa surface and the rice straw core (Tatami-doko).

3. Sound Absorption

The soft materials used in Tatami absorb impact noise. You might notice a unique silence when entering a Tatami room; this is because the floor itself is absorbing the sound.
